The STAR IT-platform was implemented by the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2017/18 to facilitate supervisory exercises such as the EU wide banking stress-test. It leverages a wide range of technologies, many of them from the big data domain. Examples are MongoDB and Oracle Exadata. The solution automates previously manual processes and provides ECB supervisors with the necessary means to collect large volumes of data from supervised banks and subsequently analyse it in a timely manner. A single submission from a bank can contain up to 1 million data points and require several hundred thousand of data quality checks to be executed. The platform also allows banks to perform pre-validation prior to submission. In addition the platform enables supervisors to run sophisticated statistical models to challenge submissions from banks and subsequently analyse the results in a collaborative manner.
