Prof Dr Lorenz Hilty
Prof. Dr. Lorenz Hilty is Professor of Informatics at the University of Zurich with a research focus on sustainability aspects of digital technologies, including ICT applications for sustainability (ICT4S) and the assessment of energy and climate impacts of the digital transformation.
Lorenz Hilty was born in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in 1959. He received his PhD in computer science from the University of Hamburg in 1991. Later stations of his work included the Research Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing, University of Ulm, and the University of St Gallen. He has been a guest professor at the Institute for Social Ecology, Vienna, and at the Royal Institute of Technology KTH, Stockholm, Center for Sustainable Communications. From 2004 to 2010, he was leading the newly created “Technology and Society Lab” of Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research. In 2010, he was appointed professorship at the University of Zurich while keeping his research group at Empa. Lorenz Hilty is known for seminal publications addressing the relationship between the digital transition and sustainable development. He is the founder of the international ICT for Sustainability (ICT4S) conference series and a member of the steering committee of the “Klimaplattform der Wirtschaft Zürich”.
